Synthesia

AI avatar video for training, onboarding and internal communication at enterprise scale

3.5
by SynthesiaUpdated

Overview

Synthesia turns scripts into presenter-led videos using synthetic avatars and voices across many languages. It targets corporate learning and communications teams that need to produce and update video without a studio.

Key capabilities

  • Stock avatars
  • Custom avatars
  • Multilingual voices
  • Script to video
  • Slide import
  • Video translation
  • Brand templates

Strengths

  • Updating a video means editing the script, which makes maintenance genuinely cheap
  • Multilingual output removes the cost barrier to localizing training content
  • Consent and identity controls around custom avatars are stronger than most competitors'
  • Templates and slide import let non-video teams produce consistent output

Limitations

  • Avatars still read as synthetic, which undermines anything requiring warmth or persuasion
  • Gesture and expression range is narrow, so longer videos become monotonous
  • Per-seat pricing is steep relative to the narrow set of formats it produces well
  • Poor fit for marketing, storytelling or anything where production value signals credibility

Synthesia solves a specific corporate problem: compliance and product training videos go stale, and re-shooting them requires a presenter, a studio and a schedule. Replacing the presenter with an avatar turns a re-shoot into a text edit.

That is a real efficiency, and it is why adoption concentrates in learning and development rather than marketing. Internal audiences tolerate a synthetic presenter when the alternative is a slide deck. External audiences read the same avatar as a signal that the company did not care enough to film a person.

The quality gap is narrowing but has not closed. Lip sync and voice are good; micro-expression, gesture and timing are not, and the deficit becomes obvious past a couple of minutes. Script for short segments, use it where information transfer is the goal, and keep it away from anything that depends on trust.
