ChatGPT

The general-purpose assistant that defined the category and still sets its default expectations

Overview

OpenAI's consumer-facing assistant, combining chat, web search, file analysis, image generation and voice in one interface. It is the broadest of the mainstream assistants and the one most third-party workflows assume you already use.

Key capabilities

  • Web browsing
  • Code interpreter
  • Custom GPTs
  • Voice mode
  • Image generation
  • Deep research
  • Connectors

Strengths

  • Widest feature surface of any consumer assistant — search, code execution, files, images and voice in one place
  • Custom GPTs and connectors let non-developers package a workflow and share it internally
  • The API and the consumer product share a model family, so prototypes transfer cleanly to production
  • Mobile and desktop apps are genuinely good, including background voice conversations

Limitations

  • Model naming and tier limits change often enough that guidance goes stale within months
  • Usage caps on the stronger reasoning models are opaque and hit heavy users mid-task
  • Long-context recall degrades on very large document sets compared with dedicated retrieval tooling

ChatGPT is the reference point most people use to judge every other assistant, which is both its advantage and its problem. The advantage is coverage: almost any task you can describe has a supported path, and the ecosystem of custom GPTs, connectors and third-party integrations is larger than any competitor’s.

The problem is that breadth makes the product harder to reason about. Which model answers your question, how much context it retains, and what quota you are burning are all decisions the interface makes on your behalf. Power users tend to notice this first on long analytical sessions, where a silent model downgrade changes answer quality without explanation.

For evaluation purposes, treat ChatGPT as the baseline rather than the answer. Run your real workload through it, then test whether a narrower tool — a coding-specific assistant, a research engine, a retrieval stack — does that one job materially better. Often it does.
