What is an answer engine?
An answer engine searches the web, reads the retrieved pages, and returns a synthesized answer with inline citations at the claim level. The limitations are real. Organization inside a Space is basic, there is no meaningful tagging or hierarchy, and export options are thinner than a serious research workflow wants. It is a good scratchpad, not a knowledge base.
Does the model you pick matter?

The paid tier is worth it if you run several substantive research questions a day. It is not worth it for occasional lookups, and the free tier is honest enough that you can determine which you are within a week.
Tiers rather than figures, since pricing changes:

Multi-source synthesis. “What are the main criticisms of this framework, and who makes them?” Google returns ten links; Perplexity returns the synthesis with sources attached. This is the core use case and the gap is large.
Unfamiliar territory. When you do not yet know the vocabulary of a field, a cited overview plus follow-ups gets you oriented faster than reading five introductory articles.
Ad-free commercial-adjacent queries. Comparison and evaluation queries are exactly where conventional search results are most degraded by advertising and affiliate content. Perplexity is not immune to citing that content, but the interface is not built around monetizing your click.

Where Google wins
Navigation. You want a specific site. Perplexity generates a paragraph you did not ask for.
Local and real-time. Restaurants, opening hours, live scores, transit, breaking news in the last hour. Google’s index freshness and local data are not close to matched.
Shopping. Availability, current price, delivery. Perplexity has added commerce features, but this remains Google’s home ground.
When you want to judge sources yourself. For legal, medical or financial matters, seeing the ranked source list and applying your own credibility judgment is often the correct process. Synthesis removes that.
