Best AI Image Generators: A Practical Comparison

The image generation field has converged on quality. Every serious model now produces attractive output from a casual prompt, so aesthetics is a weak differentiator. What actually separates these tools in production is how reliably they follow instructions, how well they edit an existing image, and whether the license permits the use you have in mind.

That last point is where most teams get into trouble, so this comparison treats licensing as a first-class evaluation criterion rather than a footnote.

How do we evaluate AI image generators?

On six criteria, in rough order of how often they decide a real project: prompt adherence, text rendering, style control, editing and inpainting, licensing and commercial rights, and workflow integration. Aesthetics is deliberately absent, because every serious model now produces attractive output from a casual prompt and it no longer separates them.

Prompt adherence. Does the model render the specific things you asked for — counts, spatial relationships, negations, multiple subjects with distinct attributes — or does it produce a beautiful image that ignores half the brief? This is where the gap between models is widest and where casual testing is least informative.

Text rendering. Legible, correctly spelled typography inside an image. This was a universal failure two generations ago and is now merely difficult. Long strings, small type and non-Latin scripts remain unreliable everywhere.

Style control. Reproducing a defined visual identity across many images. Includes reference images, style parameters, and fine-tuning or LoRA training on your own assets.

Editing and inpainting. Masked regions, object removal, extension of the canvas, and instruction-based editing where you describe a change in words. Editing quality now matters more than first-generation quality for most commercial work, because real projects iterate.

Licensing and commercial rights. What the terms permit, whether the model’s weights carry use restrictions, whether indemnification exists.

Workflow integration. API availability, node-graph tooling, design tool plugins, batch generation, deterministic seeds.

The major image generators

Midjourney

Midjourney still has the strongest default aesthetic of any model. A short, vague prompt returns something composed, lit and color-graded in a way that others require deliberate prompting to match. For mood boards, concept art and editorial illustration that is a real advantage.

The tradeoff is control. Midjourney’s house style asserts itself, and neutralizing it takes work. Prompt adherence on precise compositional instructions has improved considerably but still trails the most instruction-following models. Its style reference and character reference features are the best-in-class answer to consistency, and they are the reason many studios stay.

Licensing has specific traps. Generations on standard plans are public in the community gallery by default; private generation requires a higher tier. Trial and free usage grants far weaker rights than paid usage. Organizations above a revenue threshold are required by the terms to be on a specific higher plan. None of this is hidden, but plenty of teams discover it after the fact.

DALL·E and chat-integrated generation

Image generation inside a general assistant has become the most common way people actually make images, and it changes the interaction model. You describe a change in conversation rather than editing a prompt string, and the assistant carries context between turns.

Prompt adherence and text rendering in this category are strong, because the underlying systems benefit from a language model rewriting and expanding the prompt before generation. The same mechanism is a liability when you want literal control: your carefully specified prompt may be rewritten before it reaches the image model.

Terms of use for the major assistants generally assign output ownership to the user, subject to content policies. Content policies are stricter here than anywhere else — public figures, brands and anything adjacent to a safety category are frequently refused. If your work involves realistic people or recognizable products, expect friction.

Is Stable Diffusion still worth using?

Yes, when you need control. Stable Diffusion’s importance is no longer about the base model quality. It is about the ecosystem: tens of thousands of community fine-tunes, LoRA adapters trained on specific styles or subjects, ControlNet models that condition generation on pose, depth or edges, IP-Adapter for reference-image conditioning, and ComfyUI as a node-based environment where all of it composes into a repeatable pipeline.

Nothing else offers that degree of determinism. If you need the same character in forty panels, or generation constrained to an exact camera angle from a 3D layout, this is where that work happens.

Licensing is genuinely complicated and has changed across generations. Earlier releases used OpenRAIL licenses, which are permissive about commercial use but include a list of prohibited applications — a field-of-use restriction that makes them not open source. Later releases moved to a community license that is free for non-commercial use and for commercial use below an annual revenue threshold, with an enterprise agreement required above it. The practical implication: “I downloaded the weights” tells you nothing about whether you may ship the output.

Flux

Black Forest Labs’ Flux models set the current bar for open-weight image quality, with notably better prompt adherence and anatomy than the previous open generation. The editing-focused variants brought instruction-based image editing to local pipelines, which was the biggest missing capability in open tooling.

The licensing structure requires attention because it differs per variant. The fast distilled variant ships under a permissive open source license. The higher-quality development variant ships under a non-commercial license, despite being the checkpoint everyone actually downloads. The top-quality variant is API-only. A substantial amount of commercial work is being done on the non-commercial checkpoint by people who never read past the download button.

If you want Flux quality in a commercial product, use the API tier or the permissively licensed variant, or negotiate a license. Do not assume that a downloadable file is a usable one.

Is Ideogram still the best for text in images?

For long strings and multiple text elements, yes. Ideogram’s differentiator is typography. It was the first model to make in-image text reliable, and it remains a sensible default for posters, packaging mockups, signage and anything where a headline has to be spelled correctly. Its handling of layout — text placed sensibly within a composition rather than pasted across it — is still better than most general models.

General-purpose models have narrowed this gap significantly. Ideogram’s advantage is now clearest on longer strings and multiple text elements in one image, which is precisely where competitors still degrade.

Adobe Firefly

Firefly rarely wins on raw output quality, and that is not the point of it. Its case is provenance and integration. The models are trained on licensed and public domain material, output carries Content Credentials metadata, and enterprise plans include contractual indemnification against third-party IP claims.

For a regulated industry, an agency with client indemnity obligations, or any organization whose legal team asks where the training data came from, that combination is decisive regardless of benchmark position. The integration into Photoshop and Illustrator — generative fill, generative expand, vector generation — also puts the model where designers already work, which matters more than most comparisons admit.

Others worth knowing

Google’s image models ship inside Gemini and Vertex AI with strong instruction following and conversational editing, invisible watermarking on output, and indemnification available on some enterprise terms. Recraft targets brand and design work with true vector output and reusable style definitions, which is unusual and useful for logo and icon work. Leonardo, Krea and Playground wrap open models in production-oriented interfaces with team features. Several open-weight image models from Chinese labs have arrived under permissive licenses and are competitive on prompt adherence, particularly for non-English text.

Model quality rankings shift every few months. License structures and workflow integration change far more slowly, which is why those columns should carry more weight in a procurement decision.

What are the commercial licensing pitfalls?

Five failure modes account for nearly every problem we see: confusing terms-of-service ownership with copyright, downloadable weights that carry non-commercial licenses, free-tier terms that differ from paid-tier terms, revenue and headcount thresholds that gate commercial use, and downstream infringement risk that owning an output does nothing to remove.

Not necessarily. A service granting you “ownership” of output is a contract between you and that service. It cannot grant copyright that does not exist. The US Copyright Office position is that purely machine-generated material lacks the human authorship required for protection, with registration possible only for the human-authored contributions such as substantial selection, arrangement and modification. For a brand asset you intend to enforce against copycats, that distinction matters enormously.

Can you use downloadable weights commercially?

Not always, and assuming otherwise is the single most common mistake in this category. Several of the best open image models — including the most popular Flux checkpoint and some Stable Diffusion generations — carry licenses that prohibit or restrict commercial use. Availability on a model hub is not permission.

Do free-tier terms match paid-tier terms?

Frequently not. Multiple services grant only non-commercial rights on free plans, make free-tier generations public by default, or reserve broader rights to your prompts and outputs. Testing on a free plan and shipping on the assumption that the terms are the same is a reliable way to create a problem.

Revenue and headcount thresholds

Both hosted services and open-weight licenses increasingly gate commercial use behind company size. The threshold is usually generous, but it is binding, and it can be crossed by growth rather than by any change in how you use the tool.

Downstream infringement risk

Ownership of an output does not immunize you against a claim that the output infringes someone else’s work. Style is generally not protectable, but a generation that reproduces a recognizable character, logo or photograph is a risk regardless of which model produced it. Indemnification, where offered, is the only real mitigation, and it usually carries conditions such as leaving safety filters enabled.

How do image models fit into a production workflow?

For one-off assets, the hosted tools win on convenience. The bottom line

Choose Midjourney if the deliverable is aesthetic and the workflow is human-in-the-loop. Choose a chat-integrated generator if speed of iteration matters more than precise control. Choose Stable Diffusion with ControlNet if you need repeatability and are willing to maintain a pipeline. Choose Flux if you want the best open-weight output and will respect the per-variant license. Choose Ideogram when the image is mostly typography. Choose Firefly when provenance and indemnification are the requirement.

Then do the boring part first: read the license for the exact plan or checkpoint you will use in production, confirm that it covers commercial distribution at your company’s size, and decide in advance what you will do about assets you cannot copyright. That step costs an hour and prevents the only failure mode in this category that is expensive to fix.
