Intercom Fin

Customer support agent that resolves tickets from your own help content and hands off cleanly when it cannot.

by IntercomUpdated

Overview

Fin is Intercom's AI support agent. It answers customer questions from your help center, past conversations, and connected knowledge sources, takes actions through configured workflows, and escalates to a human with full context when confidence is low. Pricing is tied to resolutions rather than seats, which aligns cost with outcomes.

Key capabilities

  • Answers grounded in your content
  • Human handoff with context
  • Multilingual responses
  • Workflow actions and lookups
  • Answer source citations
  • Resolution analytics

Strengths

  • Grounding in your own help content keeps answers close to documented policy
  • Escalation preserves conversation context, so customers do not repeat themselves
  • Resolution-based pricing means unresolved conversations do not quietly bill you

Limitations

  • Answer quality is capped by help center quality — thin documentation produces thin answers
  • Deepest capabilities assume you are already committed to the Intercom platform
  • Deflection metrics can flatter performance if abandoned conversations are counted as resolved

Fin is a retrieval-grounded support agent, and nearly everything about its performance follows from that. Answers are drawn from your help center, prior resolved conversations, and connected sources, which constrains the model to documented policy instead of plausible invention. The mechanism is the same retrieval-augmented generation pattern used across enterprise assistants, tuned for a support corpus.

The consequence teams underestimate is that deploying Fin is a documentation project. Gaps, contradictions, and out-of-date articles that a human agent silently works around become visible immediately as bad answers. Most of the implementation effort lands on content, not configuration.

Where it fits: high-volume first-line support with repetitive questions and a maintained knowledge base. Escalation design matters as much as the model — the measure worth tracking is resolved-without-follow-up, not raw deflection rate.
