Most browser-agent projects fail in operations, not intelligence. A single local Chromium instance works in a demo; a hundred concurrent sessions with rotating proxies, crash recovery, and downloadable artifacts is a platform problem. Browserbase exists to absorb that problem.
The observability layer is the part teams underestimate. When an agent reports failure on step nine of a fourteen-step workflow, a recorded session shows whether the page changed, the selector drifted, or the model simply chose wrong. Without it, debugging is guesswork over logs.
Where it fits: pair it with a reasoning layer — a custom loop, a framework like LangGraph, or an open-source web agent — once prototypes need to run reliably and in parallel. If you are still validating whether a browser agent solves your problem at all, a local browser is cheaper and sufficient.
